Nephrology

Did you know?

A diseased kidney can be removed through puncture wounds in the abdomen?

Nephrology is the study of kidneys, which are responsible for removing poisons from our blood. When our kidneys do not function properly, our blood must be filtered mechanically by way of dialysis. Deaconess offers acute dialysis to make sure our patients being treated for other diseases receive the treatment they need. Below are listed some of the most common diseases and their treatments:

Some Common Kidney Disease

Treatment Options

Acute dialysis for those people with kidney failure being treated for other diseases

  • Chemotherapy for those who have cancer
  • Kidney removal by general surgery or using a scope
  • Lithotripsy to break up kidney stones

Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is the treatment for stones in the kidney and urinary tract.  It uses sound waves to break the stones into pieces small enough to pass through the urinary system.

Dialysis

Dialysis is using a machine to remove impurities from the blood when the kidneys are not functioning as they should.  Deaconess offers acute dialysis for people who need dialysis, but are in the hospital for other treatment.
