Diagnostic Testing

Testing for urinary tract disease includes X rays with and without dye, ultrasound and laboratory tests such at urinalysis or blood tests to determine kidney function.

Brachytherapy is the temporary or permanent implantation of radioactive seeds to kill cancer. It is often used in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Deaconess has provided permanent seed placement for many years. This procedure is done in the operating room under anesthesia and involves inserting the tiny seeds into the prostate.

We have been doing high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy since 2006. This involves the temporary, surgical placement of a tube directly into prostate. A radioactive seed is then run down the tube and left in place long enough to give the prescribed dose of radiation (up to a few minutes) and then removed. The tubes are left in place and the procedure is repeated the next day.

Cryoablation

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment for prostate cancer. It freezes the prostate to kill the cancer cells. Patients only need to stay in the hospital for 24 hours, have less postoperative complications and experience a much quicker recovery.

Greenlight Procedure for Noncancerous Prostate Enlargement

An enlarged prostate, even if not cancerous, can prevent urine from exiting the body normally. This procedure uses a special laser to remove excess tissue to stop the blockage.

Neobladder Procedure

This specialized surgery fashions a new bladder to be used for the elimination of urine when cancer or other diseases prevents normal flow through normal channels. This procedure eliminates the need for an external pouch. Talk to your doctor to see if this is an option for you.

Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is the treatment for stones in the kidney and urinary tract. It uses sound waves to break the stones into pieces small enough to pass through the urinary system.

Dialysis

Dialysis is using a machine to remove impurities from the blood when the kidneys are not functioning as they should. Deaconess offers acute dialysis for people who need dialysis, but are in the hospital for other treatment.
