College-Internship Opportunities

The College Volunteer / Intern program at Deaconess Medical Center focuses on students who are enrolled in Pre-Medical, pre-Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiology, and/or students interested in pursuing a career in other areas of the healthcare field, including Finance, Human Resources, Medical Records, and Hospital Administration.  The hospital staff and physicians support the College Volunteer / Internship program, understanding the value this important program represents for our future generation of caregivers.

Deaconess Medical Center partners with local universities to provide internship opportunities for school credit.  Internship placements are specific to the student’s career and/or major.  By volunteering, the student observes the knowledge and skills used everyday by healthcare professionals who understand the direct impact volunteering has for the organization and the benefit it may have toward the student’s future career choices.

Application / Interview

Potential volunteers are considered based on their application, references, screenings, and a formal interview with Volunteer Services.  All internship opportunities are facilitated by Volunteer Services and the university where the student is enrolled.  Applications must include:

  • 1 letter of reference from a college professor
  • 1 character reference (references from family members not accepted)
  • Documentation of immunity to MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella/Rubeola)
  • Documentation of immunity to Chicken Pox (Varicella)

If documentation of the above immunization requirements are unavailable, a blood draw verifying immunity will be necessary (see “Requirements” below).

Requirements

College Volunteers must be currently enrolled or registered at a college or university.  After the initial interview with Volunteer Services, final acceptance into the College Volunteer / Intern program will be based on a national criminal background check performed by Volunteer Services at no cost to the applicant.  In addition, all applicants accepted into the program undergo a mandatory health screening, done on-site at no cost to the volunteer. The health screening includes:

  • Verification of MMR immunity (history of disease or vaccination record)
  • Verification of Chicken Pox immunity (history of disease or vaccination record)
  • Tuberculosis (TB) testing
  • Drug Screening
  • Vision/Hearing Screening

College Volunteers /Interns are required to volunteer a minimum of (1) four-hour shift per week for a minimum of one session (approximately 3 months).  All volunteers must attend a mandatory safety/program orientation and department-specific training prior to volunteering.  Department placement is based on current availability.

A Year-Round Program

The College Volunteer / Intern program is a year-round program, rotating 4 times per year (fall, winter, spring and summer).  This allows potential applicants to be considered for possible program openings, and also enables current volunteers to rotate into other departments.

College Volunteer / Intern Program Schedule

Please look at the Volunteer Events to see the current schedule for this program.  PLEASE NOTE:  Only those applicants who have been interviewed and accepted into the program can attend the volunteer orientation.
