Accounting/Finance
The Accounting/Finance volunteer serves as a support person for the Accounting/Finance staff by assisting with many vital functions within this department. Accounting/Finance support volunteers must be able to perform basic computer functions. Experience and/or understanding of Microsoft Excel are recommended.
American Cancer Society Resource Center
The ACS Resource Center volunteers are specially trained volunteers who provide cancer-related information to diagnosed cancer patients, their families and caregivers. Cardiac Patient Advocate
The Cardiac Patient Advocate volunteer visits with Cardiac patients and their families before and after heart surgery. This position requires that the volunteer be a former heart patient themselves. The Cardiac Patient Advocate volunteer offers support and answers any questions the patient and family may have. The volunteer may also make follow-up calls to the patient with their permission.
Emergency Department
The Emergency Department provides service to a diverse group of patients and situations in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Volunteers provide assistance to the department staff by performing a multitude of duties. This area provides excellent exposure to the healthcare profession by allowing the volunteer a close-up perspective of the knowledge and skills used everyday in an Emergency environment. Emergency Department volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
Eucharistic Minister
The Eucharistic Minister volunteer supports the Pastoral Care staff by visiting with Catholic patients and offering them communion and/or a blessing/prayer. The Eucharistic Minister's role is to provide assistance to the patients and families of Deaconess, with the understanding that all patient information and interaction is held in strict confidence.
Guest Services
The Guest Services volunteer performs a variety of duties as needed by staff, patients, and visitors. This volunteer position also includes being “on-call” to various departments by answering pages and running errands within the facility, including transporting of discharged patients, delivering flowers & mail to patients, delivering information to Medical Records, and other duties as requested. This position allows the volunteer to become very familiar with many areas of the hospital, as well as be able to communicate with both staff and patients. Volunteers must be able to walk without assistance.
Gift Shop
The Gift Shop volunteer contributes to the success of the hospital Gift Shop by providing high levels of customer service to the public and the staff within the hospital. Duties include cashiering and providing assistance to customers as they shop. Gift shop volunteers receive a 15% discount on items purchased in our shops. Applicants 16 and older are welcome to apply. Volunteers must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Hyperbaric Therapy/ Wound Care
The Hyperbaric Therapy/Wound Care volunteer supports the staff within this department by assisting with next-day appointment reminder calls. This service greatly decreases the rate of patients who do not show for their scheduled appointment and allows the staff to better anticipate the needs of their patients for any given day. This volunteer position also involves filing and other clerical duties in support of the department.
Intensive Care / Cardiac Intensive Care Liaison
The Intensive Care and Cardiac Intensive Care Liaison volunteer serves as a communication link between the ICU/CICU staff and the patient's families. The volunteer in this area plays an important role in supporting the families who are in the waiting room. Duties include providing directions to other areas of the hospital, making phone calls to assist the families as needed, and checking with the staff and updating the family members on a regular basis.
Medical Records
The Medical Records volunteer supports the staff within the Medical Records department. This position is a clerical role, including such duties as preparing mailings, making phone calls to physicians’ offices, sorting completed outpatient charts, as well as alphabetizing, copying and filing.
Mother/ Baby
The Mother/Baby unit volunteer provides support to the staff and patients on this unit. Duties include clerical support, running errands for nursing staff, and assisting patients under the supervision of the nursing staff.
Osteoporosis / Blood Pressure Screening
The Osteoporosis/Blood Pressure Screening volunteer provides Osteoporosis Bone Density ultrasound heel tests and Blood Pressure readings to the public free of charge. Volunteers are trained how to operate the Osteoporosis and Blood Pressure screening machines. Volunteers must be able to bend at the waist repeatedly.
Patient Care Floors
Volunteers on placed on Patient Care Floors provide assistance to the floor nursing staff as well as the patients. Duties include stocking patient rooms and supply closets, running errands for nursing staff, discharging patients from the floor using a wheelchair, clerical duties, and other duties as assigned. Pharmacy
The Pharmacy volunteer provides assistance to the Pharmacy staff by performing such duties as hourly prescription drop-offs/pick-ups, sorting outdated medications, and a variety of other duties. This volunteer position also allows for observation of Pharmacists in a professional environment and exposure to a Pharmacy career in a realistic setting. Volunteer opportunities are available in both the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacies. Volunteers must have a Level B Pharmacy licensure, attainable through the Washington State Department of Health. Volunteers must be able to walk without assistance.
Radiology
The Radiology volunteer provides assistance to the radiology department staff. This volunteer position is specific to college students pursuing a career in Radiology. This experience allows college students opportunities to observe all aspects of the Radiology department including the patients. Other duties are assigned as determined by the department mentor.
Safety Management
The Safety department volunteer assists with clerical duties such as filing, copying, etc. This volunteer also updates safety documents using the computer database. Volunteer must be able to perform basic computer functions using the Internet and Microsoft Excel.
Sewing Guild
Sewing Guild volunteers design and sew quilts, blankets, Christmas stockings for babies born during the holidays, neck scarves for “Deke the Dog” (plush dogs given to children that are treated at Deaconess) as well as items for our NICU (Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit). The Sewing Guild meets twice a month on Wednesdays.
Short Stay / Cardiac Short Stay
The Short Stay volunteer provides assistance to the staff, patients, and families by preparing patient rooms, stocking linens and blankets, transporting patients to various locations within the facility, and preparing and serving post-procedure snack trays for patients under the direction of staff.
Surgery Center
Volunteers in this fast paced department assist in a variety of ways, including transportation of patients and families, serving snack trays to patients, preparing patient rooms, plus transporting materials from the Surgery Center to other departments.
Surgery Center Registration Area
The Surgery Center Registration Area volunteer greets surgical patients and assists them during the registration process. Volunteers in this role also provide clerical assistance to the Registration staff and other duties as requested.
Surgery Center Waiting Area
The Surgery Waiting Area Liaison volunteer acts as a communication link between the surgical patient, relatives and doctors. The volunteer notifies the families of any updates, as well as the progress of the procedure. The volunteer also provides services such as directions to other areas of the hospital and preparing coffee for the families in the waiting room.
Volunteer Services Office
The Volunteer Services office volunteer assists the Volunteer Services Director with various clerical duties including data entry, filing, copying, and other duties as requested. Volunteer must be able to perform basic computer functions using Microsoft Word, and Excel. Volunteer will also assist with data entry into the Volunteer Works database (will be trained by Volunteer Services Director).
